ICF — What is it?

ICF stands for Insulated Concrete Forms. They are hollow foam blocks or panels (EPS or sometimes XPS) that stack like Lego, are reinforced with steel, and then filled with concrete to create a monolithic, steel‑reinforced, insulated wall with a built-in vapor barrier. 

Interior finishes can be fastened directly to the ICF walls because the forms include integrated fastening strips or webs molded into the foam. These strips accept screws and other fasteners for drywall, paneling, or other interior materials — no additional framing required.

Exterior finishes also attach directly to the ICF surface without furring or secondary framing. Stucco, stone veneer, siding, or EIFS systems bond securely to the foam, creating a continuous, insulated envelope that eliminates thermal bridging and simplifies installation.

This direct fastening capability is one of ICF’s biggest advantages — it saves time, reduces material costs, and maintains the integrity of the wall’s insulation and air seal.
